psy·cho·ther·a·py (SY-koh-THAYR-uh-pee) NOUN:
pl. psy·cho·ther·a·pies
The treatment of mental and emotional disorders through the use of
psychological techniques designed to encourage communication of conflicts and
insight into problems, with the goal being relief of symptoms, changes in
behavior leading to improved social and vocational functioning, and personality
growth.
Psychotherapy/Counseling: How it Works
During the first psychotherapy session, the matters bothering you the most
will be discussed. Next, the specific goals for psychotherapy will be explored.
As treatment progresses, you will learn techniques for better problem-solving,
communication, stress management, and emotional well being. A key element of
this process is that you will be incorporating your new skills into your
day-to-day life. You will move from insight and understanding to action. The aim
is for you to see and feel positive changes as you put your knowledge into
practice.
Typically, an initial psychotherapy session will last about 60 minutes.
Ongoing psychotherapy sessions are usually 50 minutes in length (but 25 and
75-minute psychotherapy appointments can also be arranged). It is possible to
conduct psychotherapy on a bi-weekly, weekly, or as needed basis.
If you plan to use Dr. Schaefer's services, she will send you intake forms by
mail or you may download them here. Please fill them out and bring them to the
initial session.
Psychological Testing: How it Works
Dr. Schaefer offers a wide range of formal psychological tests (i.e.,
personality, career, IQ). Psychological testing provides in-depth knowledge
about an individuals mental health symptoms, personality or intelligence.
Results can be used to formulate or confirm a diagnosis. Test results are also
used to expedite treatment. Testing sessions vary in length depending on the
testing requested. Many assessments are covered by insurance.
